UFF-FIU Legislative Affairs Chair Jim Burns: On June 29th, Governor DeSantis signed the state budget for fiscal year 2020-2021. An announcement on the Governor’s Website noted that despite the challenges confronting Florida due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the budget “ensures the state’s priorities are protected and funded.” An examination of the $1 billion in spending vetoed by Governor DeSantis, however, demonstrates whose interests he does not consider a priority. TAKE ACTION: The HEROES Act

On May 15th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act to provide $3 trillion in relief for the impacts of COVID-19. This includes $1.56 billion for higher education. Updates from June FIU-BOT Meeting

Important happenings from today’s FIU-BoT meeting: 1) The BoT voted to ratify the CBA amendments faculty ratified in spring. This means we officially have an updated contract! 2) The BoT also approved the Guidelines for Reopening plan put forth by the administration. Spring MOU on Teaching/Research Evals, Tenure & Promotion, and Remote Teaching

As we continue to navigate the impacts of COVID-19 and act to minimize its disruption to our students and our own work, it is important that faculty rights established in the Collective Bargaining Agreement are not overlooked. CBA Ratification Meeting & Voting

Prior to the ratification, all in-unit faculty are invited to attend a virtual ratification meeting on Thursday, April 23rd from 11am-1pm via Zoom(link and password sent to faculty emails).
