{"id":5307,"date":"2025-04-14T23:19:57","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T03:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uff-fiu.net\/wordpress\/?p=5307"},"modified":"2025-04-14T23:21:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T03:21:02","slug":"uff-fiu-calls-for-fius-withdrawal-from-ice-287g-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uff-fiu.net\/wordpress\/2025\/04\/14\/uff-fiu-calls-for-fius-withdrawal-from-ice-287g-program\/","title":{"rendered":"UFF-FIU Calls for FIU\u2019s Withdrawal from ICE 287(g) Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UFF-FIU Calls for FIU\u2019s Withdrawal from <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/identify-and-arrest\/287g\"><strong>ICE 287(g) Program<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>United Faculty of Florida\u2013Florida International University (UFF-FIU) is deeply disturbed by the recent reporting that, as of April 10, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/education\/article304052556.html\">Florida International University confirmed on Friday that it has enrolled in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement program known as 287(g) that will allow campus police to stop, question and in some cases detain people who they suspect are in the country illegally.<\/a>\u201d We are equally alarmed to hear about the termination of the F-1 visa status of 18 FIU students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UFF-FIU calls for the immediate withdrawal of FIU\u2019s participation in the 287(g) program and for full transparency regarding the status of the affected students. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This move threatens the safety and trust of a student body that is majority Hispanic, heavily immigrant, and home to nearly 600 students protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These students are not just statistics. They are classmates, educators, research partners, and community leaders. FIU has long prided itself on being an institution of access &amp;\u00a0 opportunity. We are recognized as the nation\u2019s largest Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). These recent developments betray that legacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We affirm that every member of our university community has a basic right to feel safe on campus\u2014free from profiling, surveillance, and fear of deportation. FIU\u2019s latest act of anticipatory obedience undermines the rights of our community and jeopardizes the opportunity for all students and faculty to learn from and engage with their non-citizen peers. FIU\u2019s haste to comply with ICE is in direct conflict with its stated <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiu.edu\/about\/mission-and-vision\/\"><strong>vision<\/strong><\/a><strong>.
