Q: Will there be an individual Zoom link for the Spring UFF-FIU Chapter meeting at which Chapter elections will be held?
A: No, the meeting will be in-person only, either at the Wertheim Conservatory, WC 130, at the MMC campus or in the Marine Science Reading Room, MSB 105 at BBC.
Q: Is electronic voting allowed?
A: No, voting is in-person only at the Spring Chapter meeting.
Q: Is absentee or proxy voting allowed?
A: No, absentee ballots and proxy voting are not allowed. Voting is in-person only.
Q: Do I need to be a dues-paying member to run for UFF-FIU Senator or officer?
A: Yes, you need to be a dues-paying member of UFF-FIU to run for Senator or officer.
Q: Can I attend the Spring Chapter meeting if I am not a member of UFF-FIU?
A: No, the Spring Chapter meeting at which Chapter elections will be held is for UFF-FIU members only.
Q: What is the term of office for UFF-FIU Senators and Officers?
A: The term of office for UFF-FIU Senators and Officers is one year, from the first day of Summer term in the year of election to the first day of Summer term in the following year.
Q: If I am elected as a Senator, do I need to serve on a UFF-FIU committee?
A: All Senators are expected to serve on at least one UFF-FIU committee.
Q: Can I self-nominate to run for UFF-FIU Senator or officer?
A: Yes, self-nominations are encouraged!
Q: As a UFF-FIU Senator, do I need to attend the in-person UFF Statewide Senate meeting in Orlando in the Fall and the virtual Statewide Senate meeting in the Spring?
A: Attendance at the UFF Statewide Senate meetings is strongly encouraged. The title of “Senator” comes from representing our UFF-FIU Chapter in the Statewide Senate.
Q: How often are UFF-FIU Chapter Council meetings held?
A: The UFF-FIU Chapter Council meets two or three times per semester, except during the Summer.
Q: Are UFF-FIU Chapter Council meetings held in-person or online via Zoom?
A: UFF-FIU Chapter Council meetings are held online via Zoom.
Q: Are UFF-FIU Senators expected to attend UFF-FIU Chapter Council meetings?
A: Yes, participation by UFF-FIU Senators in UFF-FIU Chapter Council meetings is expected.
Q: I cannot attend the whole two-hour Spring Chapter meeting at which elections will be held. Can I still vote?
A: Yes, you can still vote in-person at the meeting, even if you cannot attend the whole meeting.
Q: I am a candidate for UFF-FIU Senator/ officer. Will I have an opportunity to address the voters at the Spring Chapter meeting?
A: Yes, you will have an opportunity to address the voters at the Spring Chapter meeting?
Q: Do I have to be present at the Spring Chapter meeting to run for UFF-FIU Senator or officer?
A: No, you do not have to be present at the Spring Chapter meeting to run for UFF-FIU Senator or officer. But you will not be able to vote.
Q: I am a candidate, but cannot attend the Spring Chapter meeting. Will I have an opportunity to communicate with the voters?
A: Yes, if you are a candidate, but cannot attend the Spring Chapter meeting, you can send (via e-mail to elections@uff-fiu.org ) a short candidate statement prior to the election that will be read out at the meeting prior to voting.
Q: I am a candidate. Do I need to speak at the meeting/ submit a candidate statement if I cannot attend?
A: A candidate statement at the meeting is optional. It will not affect whether your name appears on the ballot.
Q: I am running for UFF-FIU Senator. What happens if I am not elected?
A: Candidates who receive the least votes and are not elected will become Alternate Senators, who are also voting members of the Chapter Council.
