Once Again, Students and Faculty Urge
Florida International University Officials to Withdraw from 287g Contract
Miami – TOMORROW Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 12 to 1 PM, FIU faculty will stand with students in our GC lawns, in MMC, outside of the FIU Board of Trustees meeting, to once again express our opposition to the FIU – ICE 287 (g) agreements.
Faculty, students, and community advocates will also be available for comments to the press to explain why we are calling for FIU Police to immediately withdraw from the ICE 287 (g) collaboration agreement.
Under Florida statute 908.11, only a “sheriff or the chief correctional officer operating a county detention facility must enter into a written agreement with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement to participate in the immigration program established under s. 287(g).” Florida International University does not operate a county detention facility and is therefore not legally required to participate in the program.
Community leaders and immigration experts warn that deputizing local police to carry out federal immigration duties under 287(g) agreements imposes a significant financial burden on taxpayers, increases exposure to legal liability, and undermines the public trust essential to building community safety.
