UFF-FIU MEDIA ADVISORY | For Immediate Release
As of July 2nd, 2025, FIU Police has officially and voluntarily signed on as a participating agency in the 287(g) agreement, which deputizes some of our campus police officers as ICE agents, an unprecedented move in our university’s history.
Our community continues to have concerns and questions about this agreement:
- Why has FIU chosen to participate in this agreement despite immigration advocates, faculty and students’ opposition?
- What does the FIU Police Department’s role as a participating agency mean exactly?
- What history do these agreements carry?
- What will enforcement look like for our university students, faculty, staff, and larger community?
- What next steps can we take to oppose this agreement and support FIU community members who feel impacted by its enforcement?
Come out and join us for this event (a follow-up to our May 21st town hall) to get the latest updates about the 287(g) agreement in general, and to collectively oppose FIU’s participation in this agreement.
For any comments or questions, please contact Tania Cepero Lopez, President, UFF-FIU, president@uff-fiu.org.
